What is Lip Primer?

While most of us are familiar with lipstick, lip gloss and lip balm, not everyone knows about lip primer. What is lip primer? Does it take the place of lipstick? Read on to learn about this great product.

Purpose

Lip primer is a type of makeup that is used as a foundation for other makeup that is applied to the lips and is not meant to be used on its own. It usually comes in a clear or nude shade so that it is not noticeable when applied. People use lip primer to make lip cosmetics last longer and eliminate the need to continually reapply them. Lip primers also help fill in any lines or wrinkles on the lips so that the lips look smoother.

Forms

Lip primer generally comes in a twist tube like most lipsticks, although it is also available in a squeeze tube. A pencil version of lip primer is available as well and is used under lip liner to limit the feathering of lipstick.

Application tips

To apply lip primer, begin with clean, dry lips. Smooth on a thin layer of lip primer. Let it dry for a few seconds before applying lip liner, lipstick or lip gloss.

Other benefits

Some lip primers contain sunscreen to help protect the lips from sun damage. Antioxidants and vitamins A, C and E are also commonly included to help keep the lips looking supple and youthful. Lip plumpers are included in some lip primers as well to make the lips appear fuller.

While lip primers are not considered essential, they do help keep lips looking attractive for a longer time during the day. They may be especially helpful when wearing darker shades of lipstick and on special occasions.
